John joined Kingston University in 1988 after studying for a BA Business Studies at Sheffield City Polytechnic, an MSc in Industrial Relations and Personnel Management at London School of Economics and Political Science and a doctorate at Kingston University.

Professor Kitching has worked at the Small Business Research Centre at Kingston University for over 20 years on projects for a variety of public and private sector organisations, including the Department of Business Innovation and Skills, New Zealand government, Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland, OECD and the World Bank.
